Private Pilot’s License

Overview

The Private Pilot's Licence (PPL (A)) was the only available licence in the UK until the introduction of the Light Aircraft Pilot's Licence (LAPL (A)).

The PPL is necessary if you wish to obtain a commercial Pilot’s licence or to be able to fly overseas. If you already have a LAPL (A) there is an option to upgrade this to a PPL (A).

However, if you prefer to undertake the training for a PPL (A) from the outset, this course requires a minimum of 45 hours of training, in comparison to the LAPL (A) which only requires 30 hours (for further information on the LAPL (A) please look at our designated information page or alternatively contact us via our enquiry form). These additional hours include instrument flying and extensive navigation (both dual and solo), which are weather dependant.

Course Breakdown

The flight instruction element of the PPL (A) course consists of a minimum of 45 hours of flight instruction including:

  • 25 hours of dual flight instruction;

  • 10 hours of supervised solo flight time;

  • Of the 10 hours supervised solo flight time, a minimum of 5 hours must be solo cross-country flight time; and

  • A solo cross country flight of at least 150 nautical miles, during which a full stop landing is made at two airfields different from the departure airfield.

The theoretical knowledge element of the PPL (A) course consists of nine subjects which can be studied through self-learning or classroom based (Ground School).

All exams must be passed within a period of 18 months (counted from the end of the calendar month when the first examination was taken). Once all exams have been passed, the certifications remain valid for 24 months. The student pilot must achieve the score of a ‘Pass’ in all written examinations before taking the subsequent Skills Test.

There is no minimum or maximum calendar time for completing the PPL (A) course.
